Morenci has an issue that encompasses both Mineral Processing and Hydromet. Instead of smelting, Morenci sends some of its copper concentrate to autoclaves for high-pressure leaching. The “tails” from this process are mostly iron oxides or hydroxides of some sort – but the material contains at least 1% copper. Right now, it goes to tails. The design team will develop a flowsheet to improve copper recovery.
